All Set
Silver Secret
Alex ran a hand along Sissy’s neck, the mare was so quiet and calm compared to most of the horses he’s ridden. She had a sweet personality about her, she was a follower, by no means dominant with anyone. She met Honorary on her first visit to Grayson Meadows barn and was tormented to no end. Steve felt bad about putting her a few stalls away from all of the other horses, but the mare liked it that way. From what Alex had heard, the mare was a very strong closer and a force to be reckoned with on the track. He assumed that if she had been raced consistently throughout her career, she would be a top grade one competitor by now. Grayson Meadows had purchased her with the intention of using her as a broodmare after the racing season was over. The mare was only three wins off of being a Grade one horse, so it only made sense to keep running her until the season was over. She’d make a great broodmare for Grayson meadows.
Alex let the mare watch some horses break from the gate and take off for their work, they were next, but they would have to wait awhile before they could load into the gate. She didn’t mind waiting at all, unlike a few mounts that came to Alex’s mind. He actually enjoyed the calmness of the mare, in his opinion it made her a bit funner to be around, he didn’t have to constantly pay attention or else he’d be thrown out of the saddle. He could let the reins hang off of her neck and she’d stand still, waiting for him to tell her it was good to go.
Alex’s mind drifted off to her upcoming race over Green Horse Fields dirt track. As of now the G2 Zebra Stakes was a three horse field, which consisted of two intrepid racing horses, the highly regarded Ramirez, and Bellefire. The field didn’t have a clear front runner, which made things difficult. Alex would have to hope for a fast pace, or place her closer than she normally would like to be placed.
“Were all set.” One of the gate assistants said to Alex, and he nodded.
They loaded into the gate with no problems, and for a moment Alex thought Sissy might have fallen asleep, but she shifted her weight to better balance herself and the thought was quickly silenced.
The gates flew open and Sissy got off to a slower start, but for her running style it was perfectly okay. The pair quickly fell into sync with each other.
Dirt flew up in her wake as she made her way around the far turn onto the backstretch. Alex asked her for a little run as they were around the middle of the back stretch and she responded. He asked her for more rounding the far turn and she followed the command. The mare really did just follow whatever you wanted her to. Turning for home Alex let out another notch and as soon as she straightened out on the homestretch he asked her for her final run and the mare exploded from his hands. She was in full flight down to the wire, watching her you never would have known that she was coming in off of an almost one month lay off. Sissy flew past the wire with Alex giving her a pat, they were both ready for what the Zebra Stakes had in store for them.
